Mother’s Day is celebrated across the globe in more than 50 countries. In the United States, this special holiday lands on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to honor and celebrate your mother.
However, this year, COVID19 has left many seniors to self-isolate from their families. Or, it has stopped you from taking a road trip to visit your mother. Not everything is bad news, and there are safe ways to celebrate Mother’s Day while being apart.
The history of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day started to be celebrated in the 1900s. It was started by Anna Jarvis when she began a campaign that advocated for the creation of a day honoring mothers. The first celebration of Mother’s day took place in 1908 when she made a public memorial of her mother that passed in her town. It was not until 1914 that the United States recognized it and made it an official holiday. President Woodrow Willson declared that Mother’s Day would be celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
What day is Mother’s Day in other countries?
Around the world, Mother’s Day is a recognized holiday, though it is not universally celebrated on the exact date. Even in the United States, people of different cultures celebrate this holiday at different times or on both occasions.
In Mexico, Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 10 every year. Egypt and some Arab countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21. Thailand celebrates mothers on August 21.
