Did you know that every minute 20 people are leaving their country to escape war, terror or being followed? Believe it or not but it is true. People every day are escaping for their lives and their families lives. These people are called refugees.
Refugees are people who have left their native land in fear of them being prosecuted for their gender, race, nationality, religion, etc. There are many refugees who have to escape as well because of a natural disaster like hurricanes or earthquakes.
At Akkase Home Health Care, we strive to raise awareness of supporting refugees in our community. We provide health care services to people of different backgrounds. Refugees can always count on us to help with home care and job opportunities.
What is World Refugee Day?
World Refugee Day is an international holiday that takes place every June 20th. World Refugee Day was created by the United Nation Refugee Agency back in June 2016. It was created to raise awareness of refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons. This allows for governments to start to collaborate and work together to do something.
In 1951 Refugee Convention, made it a protocol for people to protect them. They called for refugees to be given the same treatment as any other person in the forgien country. It was also stated that refugees who are facing death threats or freedom limitation should be returned to the country where they face those threats. However, if the individual has a criminal background or is a danger to the community that protection does not count.
The 1951 Convention includes the rights to:
-
not to be expelled, expect to be expelled under certain strictly defined conditions.
-
not to be punished for illegal entry into the territory of contracting state
-
Work
-
Housing
-
Eduction
-
Public relief and assistance
-
Access the courts
-
Freedom of movement within the territory
-
Issued identity and travel documents
What can you do to support World Refugee Day?
Make a donation.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is always looking for donations to help refugees. They serve those who have been affected by natural disasters, war or conflict. The IRC also works in countries where people do not have the support to recover from emergency crises. Plus, they help resettle refugees that were in the United State so they can still thrive.
Raise awareness.
Do not just keep this knowledge that you gained for yourself. Share it with everyone you know. By spreading the word, you will be able to make a difference in people’s lives and let them know how they can help. Share this article with a friend or attend your local World Refugee Day events.
